stats on popular logprops

[staff profile] mark
The next big feature Denise and I are focusing on is with the update page (draft/scheduled posts). Anyway, I did some stats on popular entry properties (logprops) which are those things that you can change on your entry. Mood, location, music, etc.

mysql> select lpl.name, round(count(*)/2726795*100,4) as 'pct'
            from logprop2 lp, dw_global.logproplist lpl
            where lp.propid = lpl.propid group by 1 order by 2 desc;

Some of these are straight up imports from LJ (qotdid, copyright?) and don't apply to us. If you filter out the useful ones, you get a really clear picture of which options are often used. Note that this is from the Alpha Centauri cluster only, but I expect it's representative of the entire userbase since we randomly distribute users.

To break this down by feature:

* Set userpic: 51%
* Current mood (id): 48%
* Crossposted: 43%**
* One or more tags: 42%
* Current music: 22%
* Current mood (text): 15%
* Preformatting: 7%
* Current location: 5%
* Comment screening: 1%
* Comments disabled: 0.8%
* Adult content set: 0.4%
* Comments no email: 0.16%
* Adult content reason: 0.05%

That should cover all of the widgets down below. I think this means we could pretty easily split up the options into groups:

* High usage: Userpic, Mood, Tags, Crosspost**, Music
* Low usage: Preformatting, Location, Comment Options, Adult Content

** The Crosspost values differ from the SQL output to the final data. This is because xpost can ONLY be set on entries that were NOT imported. The SQL query pulls data across all posts: including imports. If you factor out imported posts, 43% of all posts on this cluster have been crossposted, hence, the feature is far more popular than suggested by the query itself.

A much more difficult result set but possibly illuminating thing would be to make a spreadsheet of the percentages of logprops for each individual, to identify different use cases that get fuzzed out by the global view!

Ack, don't make preformatting (that's "auto-formatting off", right?) take another step to choose :(
It's good that we have to deliberately click something before it'll turn auto-formatting off, because not having it and wanting it looks worse than having it and not wanting it, but having to click for underused options and then click again for "yes, I really mean it, my entry really does already have exactly as many line breaks as I want it to have" would be annoying.

This definitely makes sense...after all, we already have post defaults for some of the things (like comment screening and comment enabling and adult content, for example). So it only makes sense to allow post defaults for all of the options. :)

And, actually, it might be really useful to have a single page to set them all in one place, since they're kinda scattered as is.

But that can be part of the settings cluster redesign upon which I am about to embark. :)

Yes, this, please. Have a setting page where you can set defaults for everything you actually want to see on the update page. It'd make for a fully customised update page, which would be awesome :)

Eh, I suppose that compromise would work - that, or a setting "don't hide options on my update page", maybe?

Or, instead of a setting (since settings have the overclutter problem too), make it so the update page remembers if you last used "collapsed" (default) or "uncollapsed" (full) mode...

I didn't see your reply until I'd made my comment over there, but that would work too. :)

I'd want the remembered setting to be on a journal by journal basis. For example, I always post preformatted text to [community profile] changelog_digest, but almost never in my own journal.

From what you wrote here, it sounds like the 43%-of-entries-are-crossposted statistic includes all of the people who automatically crosspost everything. Assuming that's correct, and assuming you could actually break down that statistic further, I wonder how many people actually explicitly set or unset the crosspost option on the update page. In other words, people who want all of their posts to crosspost will set that option in their account settings, and then never touch the option on the update page. So the crosspost option on the update page may not be as used as it seems--it's just the crosspost feature that is. If that makes sense. :)

I explicitly unset it maybe 5% of the time.

Does this mean that location and adult content stuff are going to be ditched? *worries*

I know that location probably seems useless to many, but I actually find it useful sometimes.

Okay, then I second the above suggestion for a setting along the lines of "don't hide stuff on my profile page" ... I use location with every one of my entries, and don't want to have to click to see it. Reminds me of the oldoldold LJ update page when they hid music and mood ;_;

It amuses me way too much that import_source is so high up on that list. >_<
